ABSTRACT

Background: The interaction between HIV and Trichomonas vaginalis infection has been widely studied in most developed countries but with scanty information in sub-Saharan Africa. While many of these studies have examined the prevalence of T. vaginalis infection in HIV positive individuals, no study in Nigeria has shown the effect of T. vaginalis on HIV transmission. Therefore, the study aimed to determine the occurrence of HIV in T. vaginalis infected women


Methods: A descriptive study was conducted among women attending STI clinic at the General Hospital, Badagry, Lagos, Nigeria. A total number of 201 [T. vaginalis infected] women were screened for HIV using rapid diagnostic test kits


Results: The frequency of HIV in T. vaginalis infected women was 35.8%


Conclusion: The study showed that T. vaginalis infection in women may be a high risk factor of HIV infection

ABSTRACT

Trichomonas vaginalis can be infected with double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) viruses designated T. vaginalis virus (TVV), which may have important implications for trichomonal virulence and disease pathogenesis. We tested for TVV in 40 fresh T. vaginalis isolates from Cuban patients by total extraction of nucleic acids (DNA and RNA). TVV was detected in 22 (55 percent) of the 40 T. vaginalis isolates. This gives an estimate of the infection rate of Cuban T. vaginalis isolates by the dsRNA virus. Future research should focus on the association between trichomonosis symptoms and the presence of TVV.

ABSTRACT

The present model was established for studying the ability of T. vaginalis to acquire herpes simplex virus type II [HSV]. Green monkey kidney cells [Vero cells] were infected with HCV and T. vaginalis was inoculated three days later. The progress of virus transmission was monitored by transmission electron microscopy [TEM]. Fragments of virus containing Vero cells were engulfed by the trichomonads and internalized in vacuoles, followed by resolution of the vacuole boundary. Viral particles aggregates were retained. Viable HSV was recovered from the trichomonads for five days. A study was conducted through cytopathological examination of 170 cervicovaginal smears The study revealed 25.8% having trichomoniasis, 2.9% HSV infection and 1.17% with combined infection; while HSV infections represented 4.5% in those having trichomoniasis. These results suggested the potential role of T. vaginalis in viral transmission to reduce this risk
